Inspired insights from Lance Armstrong for 2019.

Six years after his life time ban from cycling, Lance Armstrong is back in the public eye, coming out to talk about his life after all the scandals.

The last six years in a lot of ways have really sucked – it has been terrible : Lance Armstrong

Hero or a Villain?

You decide.

More importantly what can we all learn from his life so far?

After more than a decade of researching Lance Armstrong’s life, he’s undoubtedly a hero in my eyes – and it has little to do with cycling.

In his book “It’s not about the bike”, Lance Armstrong shared what he described as his gift to fellow cancer patients.

It’s a gift  which has saved millions of lives worldwide – sharing insights and hope.

Sharing how he conquered cancer.

It’s also a gift for anybody who has a burning desire to conquer anything in life – whether it may be Cancer, the Pyrenees, or any ‘ other mountain’ in life.

It’s a model which YOU too can use – a potent four legged model to achieve SUCCESS & SIGNIFICANCE in 2019 and beyond.

It’s a model which Lance Armstrong admits he is still openly working on.

I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to make things right : Lance Armstrong

Here it is in a nut shell – with all four of the table legs being of equal importance.

TABLE LEG ONE:  THE RIGHT MINDSET

The great champions set up right by adopting the right mindset.

Mindset matters most.

You have to choose:

Victor or Victim

There is ZERO middle ground.

Victor means to conquer – to have more knowledge – to come from a position of strength – to adopt a zero doubt positive approach to life.

It’s an approach which fosters very high levels of RESOLVE – something which Lance Armstrong has in abundance.

Victim on the other hand means to fight – to have less knowledge –  to come from a position of weaknesses – to adopt a negative approach to life.

There is a massive difference in approach – and outcome.

The great champion’s know that one’s best made plans in life will prove meaningless if one goes into victim mode.

Never confuse the most important part of you – your subconscious mind. You cannot have thoughts of victory and defeat in your mind at the same time. The subconscious mind has the power to send sabotaging messages to your body. All it takes is one kernel of doubt:  David Becker

I believe I would have won all of those seven Tour de France titles if everyone had been eating the same bread, drinking the same water: Lance Armstrong

TABLE LEG TWO: THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE

Champions empower themselves by acquiring greater knowledge.

Lance Armstrong empowered himself by knowing more – whether the mountain he was facing was:

Cancer or the Pyrenees

He chose to conquer, knowing that his doctors could only do so much for him.

He knew that he had to make lifestyle changes.

He knew that he had to exit the victim mode he found himself in with testicular cancer (a deep resentment to his absent father).

He did the hard yards.

Without cancer I would never have won a single Tour de France. Cancer taught me a plan for more purposeful living and that in turn taught me how to train and to win more purposefully : Lance Armstrong

Knowledge is power.

As Thomas Carlyle once said:

Adversity is the training ground of champions

TABLE LEG THREE:  THE RIGHT SUPPORT

Every great champion knows that nothing great is ever achieved alone.

You have to choose your inner team very carefully to ensure that you have the right support.

There is nothing more disempowering than having the wrong people close to you – the wrong knowledge – the wrong support.

The power in the human collective – the right support – allows you to do more with less.

It’s called leverage and it’s part and parcel of any champion’s toolkit.

TABLE LEG FOUR: THE RIGHT GAME PLAN

Finally it’s comes down to the power of human focus – which makes for great champions.

Champions power up their own personal brands by becoming crystal clear on three SUCCESS & SIGNIFICANCE determinants:

their PURPOSE in life,

their PRIORITIES in life and

their PERFORMANCE GOALS in life.

The focus and congruency of these three potent P’s unlocks and unleashes the magical multiplier which drives extra ordinary results.

It’s these three P’s which also serve as one’s compass in good time and one’s scaffolding in bad times.

Lance Armstrong is blessed with many of the traits of great champions.

It is these traits which have helped him to come out of a long dark tunnel.

He has selflessly shared his model on how to conquer cancer with the world.

Let’s hope the world forgives his ‘human errors’.

Human errors which happen when life is series of false limits and the champion’s challenge is to chase down those limits.

May he now go on to make an even greater difference in people’s lives?

I believe the best is still to come from Lance Armstrong.

Go Great.
