A BLUEPRINT and some inspiration for our Proteas at Camp Skukuza

Cricket SA has been through some turbulent times of late, but all is not lost.

They can draw some inspiration from our Springboks, who three years ago got crunched 57-0 by the All Blacks at the North Harbour Stadium. Remember that?

They bounced back to be decisive Rugby World Champions for the third time in November 2019.

Here’s a blueprint for any team or organisation wanting to bounce back from tough times.

A three step process, which takes a look at the BRAND behind the Proteas team.

STEP #1:  THE BRAND REALITY CHECK

Given the incredible cricketing talent we have in South Africa, a quick look at the Protea’s performance over the years, reveals under performance in all three formats of the game.

Except for a period at the helm of World Test Cricket, under Gary Kirsten’s guidance, something is obviously not right.

Our Springboks have won three World Cups to date.

Our Proteas have never progressed past a semi-final stage in the World Cup.

For reasons on the field of play – and off the field of play – the cold reality is that our team has been labelled as “Chokers “

Decisive change is required if we are to be World Champions.

STEP #2: THE BRAND DIAGNOSTICS

It’s important to have a close look at what’s working for the team – and what is not working for team.

Brutal honesty is required at Skukuza on all matters.

You have to build on what is working for the team, whilst also ensuring that all constraints (bottlenecks) are removed.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

STEP #3: THE BRAND GAME PLAN

Every game has a winner – every winner has a game plan.

A high level GAME PLAN demands that three critical components ( The  3P’s of Branding ) are firmly put in place.

#1: BRAND PURPOSE:

A team’s focus must be put on the bigger picture – their brand purpose.

For the BRAND PROTEAS, just like the Springboks, their purpose is to ENTERTAIN, EDUCATE AND ENRICH the nation.

Winning is the by- product of staying focused on their bigger picture – their PURPOSE.

It’s why the crowds pack into the stadiums – to be entertained, educated and enriched.

Losing on the other hand – or ‘choking’ for that matter – comes when one loses focus on the bigger picture.

As we have witnessed with our Proteas, the result is the loss of sponsors, the loss of spectators, the loss of key players – and the loss of the necessary finances to grow the game at grassroots levels.

Focusing on what is most important is the key to success.

#2: BRAND PRIORITIES:

Priority number one must be: BRAND PROTEAS –  live the brand– inspire the nation.

Ths comes from establishing the right brand identity and building the right culture.

It’s important to understand what under- pins the player’s chosen team culture – which will be seeded at Camp Skukuza.

The best team model I have witnessed in sport was under Richie McCaw’s leadership of a great All Black team:

PDNL

It stands for “Pricks Do Not Last” .

Priority number two must be BRAND PURPOSE: To Entertain, Educate and Enrich the nation.

Priority number three should read PEOPLE & DEVELOPMENT.

The Springbok team has been able to move beyond the divisive form of transformation and team quotas.#STRONGERTOGETHER

Our black rugby players have become our national heroes.

When I think of anything we achieved as a team, there was always the bigger picture in mind: Makazole Mapimpi

Let’s hope we can see the same commitment, discipline and unity coming from all our cricketers – and cricket administrators alike.

#3: BRAND PERFORMANCE GOALS:

Performance goals must be set in alignment with Purpose and Priorities, ensuring that the focus is put on the process – not the results.

The results will come for any team that has all its ducks in a row. (Excuse the pun)

Ensuring that these three high level components of their game plan are put in place – and that they are Authentic, Aligned and Actionable – will go a long way to helping our Protea’s to perform as a united team.

Go Great

Cyril.Tomorrow the nation turns its hoping eyes to you.

What the South African Covid-19 statistics reveal is interesting, BUT what they do not reveal is VITAL.

Take for instance the exponential increase in the number of ‘EXCESS DEATHS’ in South Africa.

While government recorded a total of 5,940 deaths to Covid-19 by 22 July, a Medical Research Council (MRC) report has found that “In the period 6 May – 14 July 2020, there has been an excess of 17,090 deaths from natural causes”.

The duration of the pandemic – coupled with the unprecedented lock-down period – are the primary reasons behind an increasing number of ‘excess deaths’.

Surging societal stress levels will kill far more people than Covid-19 ever will.

Livelihoods are being destroyed – businesses and families alike.

Also read: COVID-19 stress related deaths are taking their toll in South Africa.

Tomorrow, Saturday 15 August the nation has reached its tipping point.

No longer are law abiding South Africans prepared to be labelled as ‘criminals’ for wanting to feed their families.

Unemployment, hunger and poverty are becoming the second pandemic.

The FULL LOCAL ECONOMY must be allowed to OPEN UP – given strict protocols are in place.

South Africans have had more than enough time to learn about social distancing, proper hygiene and isolation.

South Africans must be trusted to do THE RIGHT THING.

Common sense must prevail if we are to unite in common purpose.

Mr President, please do THE RIGHT THING at the President Co-ordinating Council (PCC) meeting tomorrow.

The nation turns its hoping eyes to you.

Go Great.

As the Covid-19 lockdown continues, here’s a quick-fire tool kit to help keep you sane.

Covid-19 has put us all through the duration test.

With the SA lockdown fast approaching the 150 day mark –   here’s a quick- fire TOOL KIT to help keep you sane

– and to help YOU to emerge from the Covid-19 tunnel stronger and wiser.

Be the VICTOR, never play the VICTIM.

It’s okay to have those up and down days.

It’s okay to have those positive and negative moments.

That’s life.

But it’s not okay to allow your mindset to shift into victim mode.

Victimhood is THE most powerful form of self-sabotage.

Every morning, every day, every evening you have to stand guard to the door to your mind.

Choose to be the victor.

There is no middle ground on this life choice.

Take charge.

Adversity is the training ground for champions.

Steer clear of creating UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS

Champions are ‘Realistic Optimists’.

Be aware that unrealistic expectations will tax you heavily.

The reality is that the Covid-19 ‘tunnel exit’ will take time – but it will happen.

Ride it out. The light will shine again.

Go easy on yourself.

Don’t make any permanent decisions in temporary times.

Even though you feel that you may be losing it every now and then, never stop believing.

Never stop learning.

Sometimes I win. Always I learn. Roger Federer

Seek more LIFE BALANCE.

Balance is the key to living a healthy, happy and fulfilled life.

You have to invest in all three realms of your life to achieve optimum life balance:

#: PHYSICAL (what you put into your body);

#: CHEMICAL (what you put into your mouth); and

#: EMOTIONAL (what you put into your head).

Be aware that imbalance is what creates illness.

Balance is what creates wellness.

The world has shown us:

Too much or too little of anything – for too long – will create a state of imbalance.

Look for new OPPORTUNITIES.

The world may have changed a lot, but as one door closes, another may be opening.

I have heard of many inspiring South African Covid stories of people taking their core competencies and putting them to excellent use in alternative businesses.

The doors will open – if you’re open to invite more of what you really desire into your life.

Post Covid the podiums will be empty and waiting for the winners to stand up.

Invest in YOURSELF build your own high level GAME PLAN.

Playing the game of life without a game plan – is akin to steering a ship with no rudder.

You’ll end up procrastinating through life.

Other people’s priorities will fill up your days.

Ensure that your FOCUS is on the three important P’s in YOUR own life.

They are the vital cogs in any champion’s high level game plan:

#: DEFINING YOUR PURPOSE.

#: KNOWING YOUR PRIORITIES

#: SETTING YOUR PERFORMANCE GOALS

To win consistently in life these 3P’s need to be Authentic, Aligned and Actionable.

They are the keys to keeping YOU inspired to do.

Every game has a winner – every winner has a game plan.

Finally, some great news.

Experts are saying that we are now past the COVID -19 peak.

Com’on the summer of 21.
