The Sharks. Stacking undue pressure on themselves …….

Posted on: April 30th, 2019 by Rob Opie No Comments

“A Shark has to constantly move forward or it dies” Woody Allen in the film Annie Hall

Congratulations to The Sharks on their first win in Sydney since the year 2000.

A gutsy performance.

But, behind this top performance, lies a continued inability to sustain these top performances.

Great teams are those who go on to achieve:

SUSTAINED SUCCESS & SIGNIFICANCE

If the Sharks want to be a GREAT TEAM, they will need to make a few changes, as TALENT, TECHNIQUE, TECHNOLOGY and TRAINING – all of which they have in abundance – will only take them so far.

Then it all comes down to the all-important ” T ” in the GREATNESS EQUATION:

TEAM

In both business and sport the number one driver behind any team’s greatness is the inherent CULTURE it adopts……

Unfortunately we have witnessed THE SHARKS falling into one of life’s common ‘human traps’  – which has led to them placing immense undue pressure on themselves.

The human trap I’m referring to is one called…

NEPOTISM

Any team with an underlying culture of nepotism will find it increasingly difficult to produce the goods on a consistent basis –  and sustain high- performance levels.

It’s a culture guaranteed to undermine the key ingredients of success for any champion team – which are trust, focus and unity.

It’s a culture guaranteed to fail when it counts most.

Robert du Preez is a fine coach. And his sons are all mighty fine rugby players, but putting them together is never going to bring out the best in any of them – or the team.

The mental pressure placed on all the Du Preez’s must be immense – having to prove themselves worthy of selection –  week in and week out.

Playing under undue mental pressures often leads to top players inevitably losing form by virtue of the unending pressure on them to achieve top results – as we have seen with Robert du Preez JNR.

In fact, ‘burn out‘ is becoming an increasingly common phenomenon in sport as a result of players simply trying too hard to please. Many an international career has come to a premature end due to undue family pressures.

The reality is that the Du Preez brothers will play better without their dad in close proximity – and Robert du Preez SNR will coach better without the added undue pressure of having to justify the selection of his sons at every turn.

The Sharks are blessed to have some FIRST- CLASS PLAYERS in their midst – and FIRST- CLASS COACHES as well.

Let’s hope they can move forward and make the required coaching/cultural changes – before they start losing star players.

It’s no secret that the mercurial boot of Curwin Bosch is already on the radar of other teams who are willing to give him a full go at flyhalf…………..

Go Sharks.

Tiger Brands. What sport can teach business.

Posted on: April 22nd, 2019 by Rob Opie No Comments

‘I definitely think they should settle out of court and don’t fight tooth and nail like everything we have seen, they might be able to demonstrate that – well we’re not just cold hearted as the public thought we were and we actually do care about the people who eat our products “

Lulame  Megence : Consumer analyst .

Last year was a disaster year for Cricket Australia – or was it actually a blessing in disguise going into this year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.

What the Australian Cricket Board did get right – was to act decisively to remove the man at the helm: CEO James Sutherland.

Yes, the ‘ banned sandpaper cricketers’ did make some bad judgement calls – but one needs to acknowledge that they were playing within a ‘WIN AT ALL COST CULTURE ‘ –  determined, dictated and allowed to manifest by the man at the helm of Cricket Australia.

Cricket Australia’s value system had sadly lost its way under James Sutherland…………..

It was only a matter of time before it all exploded.

Fast forward to Tiger Brand’s announcement last week that it intends to defend its liability against a class action for 218  tragic listeriosis deaths.

Now, we all know that one cannot compare ‘sandpaper cheating incidents’ with the tragic LOSS OF LIFE , but what can we learn from the actions taken by the Australian Cricket Board.

ACT DECISIVELY WHEN THE PROBLEM LIES WITH CULTURE.

Yet, to date the Tiger Board has allowed CEO: Lawrence MacDougall to continue – despite being the man at the helm of arguably the biggest food tragedy in South Africa –   as well as displaying alarmingly high levels of insensitivity to the families of those who lost their lives.

Tiger is one of South Africa’s icon companies –  with icon brands loved by millions of South Africans.

As was the case with the AUSSIE CRICKET BRAND –  surely the TIGER BRAND deserves better.

In a SENS statement issued on 19 April, Tiger has stated that they intend to defend the class action.

By doing so they stand the chance of significantly ramping up the ‘BRAND’S REPUTATIONAL DAMAGE’ – as lawyers will have a field day in open court tearing into the company’s current CEO, its board, its culture, its values, and its tone….. the way things get done.

As a CEO, it’s your job to set strategy, determine culture and impose the values…….and set the tone.

As a board member it’s your job to put the right person in the CEO job.

When an investigation into Tiger’s values at the time reveals that ‘PRODUCT SAFETY’ languished way down on their hierarchical value system – lawyers will argue that this was NO ACCIDENT –   hence something was bound to go wrong sooner rather than later.

And it’s also the insurance companies who will be watching closely in what could become a protracted ‘Lance Armstrong like trial of denial‘.

Let’s hope that the Tiger Brands Board make the required changes at the helm to put Tiger firmly back on the road of performance, growth and positive contribution.

Let’s hope they can take a leaf out of Cricket Australia’s book.

Tiger’s stakeholders deserve better.

And so do the families who lost their loved ones …………….

You cannot rely on the man who made the mess, to clean it up : Richard Nixon

Tiger Woods. Some find it in the faces of their children……

Posted on: April 16th, 2019 by Rob Opie No Comments

‘Some find it in the faces of their children,  who can deny the joy it brings, when you found that special thing – you’re flying without wings’ : Westlife

Simply incredible Tiger.

Some might even call it the biggest come back since the Apollo 13.

In a long dark tunnel for 11 years, Tiger has been sorely missed by a golfing world struggling to find its new super-stars – characters to move the game forward.

But now that he’s back, what should Tiger do to send his Major tally way beyond Jack Nicklaus‘s record 18 wins.

Everybody knows Tiger’s sheer playing genius.

A quick reality check reveals that his problems have never been with his playing ability or his injuries, but rather with the way he chooses to do life.

When Tiger dominated golf for more than a decade it was because of his dad.

Earl Woods served two combat tours during the Vietnam War, one with the elite US Army Special Forces.

He was Tiger’s inspiration, his supreme tactician and his sole confidante.

He was Tiger’s ‘why’

But on that fateful day in May 2006 when Tiger lost his dad, his life began to unravel with no real ‘why’ in his life.

Only last year it changed again.

Tiger had a new found ‘why’.

My kids have only ever seen me win on YouTube : Tiger Woods in 2018

His kids became his inspiration – his ‘why’ – his purpose in life.

In Tiger’s own words it has now come full circle.

He is now : ‘THE DAD’.

Tiger’s heartfelt why has delivered his 15th Major win , but for Tiger at age 43 to go on to become the greatest golfer who ever played game he will have to do more ……..

Tiger needs a rethink.

He needs to know what it takes to be the greatest golfer to have ever played the game – great defined as Success and Significance Sustained.

In real life, Tiger’s new found ‘why’ is not a real why?

It will not take him past Jack Nicklaus’s record 18 majors.

Consider what Simon Sinek shares in his brilliant new book: Find your WHY.

Family inspire great love and commitment and most of us want very much to care for our partner, spouse or children , but one’s WHY is who we are wherever we are – not just at home . The bottom line is your family is NOT YOUR WHY.

Tiger needs to think bigger.

Think like Jack Nicklaus – as great is more than just winning.

Great champions do more.

Tiger’s why, like Jack’s always was, should read:

to Entertain, to Educate, and to Enrich lives – through his god given sporting genius

When one chooses to focus one’s finite energy on one’s true ‘why’ – winning becomes far easier – and sustainable.

At the Masters we saw it coming through when Tiger reached out to touch the hands of kids while playing on Saturday, but on Sunday it was the ‘old’ Tiger again – one who likes to stack the pressure on himself.

By the time he reached the 18th, his approach shot leading to a scrambled bogey five, revealed how close he was to ‘burn out ‘.

But Tiger deserves all the accolades. He pulled it off – he won – and his win means that the golfing world is once again alight with millions of new worldwide fans.

Indeed Tiger is THE GAME CHANGER of all time.

Television audiences’ sky rocketing worldwide.

He’s simply great for the game.

Let’s hope he can now take it to that next level.

Well done Tiger.

An inspirational comeback story at its very best………..

Mozambique’s game-changer. The times they are a changin…….

Posted on: April 11th, 2019 by Rob Opie No Comments

As our country heads to the May elections, it’s become crystal clear that President Cyril Ramaphosa is South Africa’s game-changer – and once the elections are done and dusted – we will all find ourselves on a ‘renewed’ path of growth, prosperity and unity.

But, what about our neighbours Mozambique?

Spare a thought…………

Recently struck by two devastating cyclones, they are having a real tough time in 2019 trying to get things back on path after years of challenge.

Have they got a game – changer which can also put their country on an accelerated path of growth, prosperity and unity?

In April, I was privileged to spend time in Mozambique on a travel & fishing adventure ….. to see and to listen.

The Maputo-Katembe Suspension Bridge (as pictured) and the brand new 120 km road from Maputo to the South African border is a opportune welcome relief.

It’s their game- changer.

The three kilometre long bridge, which was the vision of former President Samora Machel way back in 1979, signals a significant investment in transport infrastructure  – removing what has proved to be a ‘bottleneck constraint‘ for investment, trade, employment and tourism in Mozambique.

The times they are a changin………

The travel time from Maputo to the South African Ponta do Oura / Kozi Bay border has been cut from six hours to just 90 minutes.

While some South Africans bemoan the loss of ‘ the old Ponta do Oura playground ‘ – only accessible before by 4×4 –  others see opportunities like exploring further north in Mozambique to experience the true beauty of the  ‘Magical Mozambique’ tropical coastline.

Mozambique is open for tourism.

It’s only once you cross the Limpopo River that one begins to experience the splendour of the palm tree laden landscape – with crystal blue warm waters – and warm welcome.

It’s become far easier for tourists to go where they want to go – and the country is starting to realise the obvious benefits of embracing a ‘warm tourism culture’ – whilst expanding employment opportunities.

All bodes well for Brand Mozambique and Brand South Africa.

Both are on the upward path and closer together after so many years of challenge.

All bodes well for Africa………
