World Rugby heading down the wrong road prior to World Cup.The Game Plan

World Rugby CEO, Brett Gosper’s call for more red cards to be handed out – is taking rugby down the wrong road.

We all know that world rugby wants to stamp out reckless play that can lead to serious injury. The players know that. We all know this.

We also know that world rugby wants to send out the right message to parents – of future kids entering the game.

But, the way they are going about it, does little to keep the spectators flocking to the game.

Brett Gosper is not seeing the bigger picture of SPORT in itself.

Red cards destroy contests – and the value of the paying spectator.

Many years back a group of friends travelled to London to experience the Boks play at Twickenham.

What a sheer disappointment to all who travelled afar.

A 23 rd minute red card issued to Johannes Labuschagne ruined the experience.

The one -sided game saw England trounce a 14 man Bok team by 53-3.

A non contest from the first quarter.

Last year we witnessed the All Black / British Lions series changing course dramatically –  with the game changing red card issued to Sonny Bill Williams.

Then we all remember how Kwagga Smith’s red card destroyed a Super Final at a full house Emirates Park.

I don’t think 62000 people pay to see a 15 versus 14 game. The player can get disciplined after the game :  Johan Ackermann

Indeed spectators/supporters do not want to watch 15 play 14.

Any victory 15 vs. 14 will always be a hollow one.

The solution? A better way to do things ……

World rugby must sanction ‘’the player’’ not ‘’the spectator, the supporter’’.

Sanction can come via an on field yellow card – followed up with a post match review to hand down an appropriate discouraging sanction by looking at the player’s history and his playing intent.

Repeat offenders can receive longer bans to force behavioral change.

A stern message is still sent out by World Rugby.

There is no need to destroy the contest – the experience – via red cards.

International travelling spectators are paying a hefty price – investing in travel, hotels, tickets …… investing in sport.

And sport is about :

ENTERTAINING, EDUCATING & ENRICHING LIVES….

Brett Gosper’s call for more reds comes up short on delivering on the all important 3Es of SPORT .

Let’s hope they keep the red cards far away at World Cup 2019.

Rugby’s spectators/supporters deserve better …………

Go Great

Rob

Empower yourself by living a LIFE of BALANCE. The Game Plan

Posted on: November 20th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

In this week’s newsletter I continue the theme of wellbeing– sharing insights, innovation and inspiration on how to live a healthy and happy life of balance.

In health, the human body is designed to operate in a state of balance – and functions optimally as a harmonious, synchronised unit.

When the mind, body and spirit are all in sync, there is an optimal state of life balance.

Life is good when we observe one of the most powerful universal principles of living a balanced life:

’Too much or too little of anything for too long, will create a state of imbalance

However, as emotional beings, we live mostly hectic, fast-paced lives and many stressors are often responsible for disturbing and disrupting this optimum state of balance.

Sometimes, we get it unwittingly wrong. Sometimes, we get it habitually wrong.

We create fertile ground for a state of imbalance to evolve.

Few of us even comprehend the power (empowerment) of living life in balance – or the inherent dangers (dis-empowerment) of living life in a continued state of imbalance.

When we do get it humanly wrong – either the universe through ‘incidents or accidents’ – or the human body through ‘our physiology’ will send us a stern message:

to return the human body and mind to its optimal state of balance

Often we fail to hear the universal or physical message – and we continue to live our lives in a constant state of imbalance.

This is especially prevalent when it comes to the emotional realm of life and health – and its polarized extremes.

Here are examples:

Resentment vs. Infatuation. Hate vs. Love. Attachment vs. Detachment. Guilt vs. Self-worth. Criticism vs. Praise. Pleasure vs. Pain. Pride vs. Shame. Hope vs Despair. Gain vs. Loss. Kind vs Cruel .Challenge vs. Support.Inspired vs. Depressed , Give vs. Take. Happy vs. Sad.Purpose vs. Futility… and on and on.

The consequences of ‘too much or too little’ can be devastating, sometimes even life threatening.

Medical doctors will be quick to label YOU, and the pharmaceutical industry will continue to make billions by supplying symptomatic drugs.

The real solution is to return the human mind and body to a ‘State of Balance’- to maintain a balanced perspective on life – to see both sides.

An example of polarized emotional states which can cause havoc with our health is that of: RESENTMENT and its counter- part INFATUATION.

Too much RESENTMENT for too longer period of time – turns toxic and becomes CANCER.

Whilst swinging between the polarized extremes of RESENTMENT and INFATUATION will see doctors label the person as Bi-Polar.

Symptomatic drugs are prescribed by medical science in both these cases, but the real need is to  ‘take heed’ of the stern message which the universe is sending out – and return the human mind and body to its required state of balance –  where it can function optimally.

Pain is not the enemy. It’s the human body’s way of telling you something is wrong – something is out of balance.

One’s physical symptoms will dissolve when balance is restored.

It’s vital to seek balance in all three realms of health and life – namely:

Physical (what we put into our bodies), Chemical (what we put into our mouths) and Emotional (what we put into our heads) .

One of Britain’s greatest ever athletic champions, had it spot on when he once shared the following wisdom

We all have a finite amount of energy. Whether you use physical or mental energy it all comes from the same source. Wherever you focus your energy you’re either filling or depleting the same  ”well” – Sir Sebastian Coe

Balance is the key to self –empowerment.

Balance is the key to living a happy and healthy life.

Go Great

NO HEALTH. NO WEALTH. Five ”killers” to avoid at all cost.…….

Posted on: November 13th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

“The main idea in life is not to be the richest person in the cemetery”.

In this week’s  newsletter I take a different angle – sharing insights , innovation and inspiration from the other side of what I do – helping people to bounce back when they find themselves with ‘their back to the wall’’ – grappling with what I refer to in LIFE AND HEALTH as :

 THE BIG FIVE EMOTIONAL  KILLERS

Here they are: RESENTMENT; GUILT; HATE; CRITICISM & FUTILITY.

They destruct.

We are all human emotional beings, and when we get it humanly wrong in the emotional realm of life, things can go unwittingly and habitually wrong.

Over two decades I have researched ‘’the common denominators ‘’of people who suddenly find themselves up against it – with the cold realisation that money cannot buy back their health.

Steve Jobs was a tragic case in point.

The saying goes:

No Health. No Wealth.

Here are key insights from hundreds of case studies undertaken to date on wellness – and illness.

I trust they will help to keep YOU on the road of Health and Happiness.

It’s vital to avoid these BIG FIVE KILLERS –  at all cost.

If held long term they WILL destruct your health and your life.

Long term held RESENTMENT( bitter indignation) sends the human cell formation process into festering disarray .This is Cancer.
Long term held SELF GUILT closes down one’s motor neurons. This is Motor Neuron Dis-ease (MND)
Long term held HATE constricts the flow of the heart. This is Heart Attack.
Long term held CRITICISM clogs up the human body. This is Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Rheumatism and many more of the clogging diseases.
Long term held FUTILITY diminishes the meaning of life. This is Addiction & Depression.

One of the greatest cancer champions – who conquered prostate cancer – shared the following wisdom on the toxic emotion called resentment:

Resentment is like drinking poison – and then hoping it will kill your enemies : Nelson Mandela.

Don’t do it!

The genius of modern medical science has come a long way in the physical and chemical realms of life and health, but we still have so much to learn about the emotional realm – the most powerful realm – the human one.

Avoid the BIG FIVE EMOTIONAL KILLERS.

Fill your life with the BIG FIVE EMOTIONAL HEALERS – namely :

UNCONDITIONAL LOVE, GRATITUDE, ACCEPTANCE, FORGIVENESS & JOY.

The good news is that these potent positive emotions are far more powerful than the negative ones.

They are the ones which create a balanced perspective in your life.

A balanced life is the KEY to a healthy and happy life.

Now you know………..

Go Great

Rob

Guarding the fine line between GROWTH and GREED.The Game Plan

Posted on: November 6th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

From the Gupta saga, to the Steinhoff fiasco, to the looting of VBS and on and on – 2018 has not been a great year for South African businesses.

But, here is the good news….

The ‘disgraced dominoes ‘are beginning to fall. And they are falling faster and faster as President Cyril Ramaphosa ramps up his game plan to put Brand South Africa firmly back on the path from Good to Great to Greater.

In this week’s article I take a closer look at how management’s (and individual’s) GROWTH STRATEGY – can easily turn into a GREED STRATEGY.

I outline THREE ways to guard the fine line between Growth and Greed …..

  1. DE-EMPHASE GROWTH. EMPHASIZE GREAT.

Many companies find themselves caught up in what is known as ‘The Growth Trap’- that of chasing the numbers – chasing the game – chasing GROWTH.

Cultures which relentlessly focus on ‘hunting down the numbers’ – can set the wrong tone – by sending out a message of win at all cost.

Is it sustainable? No.

It’s far wiser to focus and build one’s culture on being: ‘’GREAT’’.

Great defined as :

SUCCESS & SIGNIFICANCE SUSTAINED.

GREAT sets the stretch, GREAT sets the commitment and importantly GREAT sets the tone – the way things will be done.

  1. DETERMINING YOUR HIGHEST VALUES

Companies (and individuals) who fail to determine and adhere to sound value systems, will find themselves crossing the fine line from Growth to Greed.

Values determine your destiny. Values tell you when to say NO. Values tell you when to walk away.

Values serve as your compass in good times – and your scaffolding in challenging times

  1. DON’T CHASE THE RESULT

Chasing the numbers – chasing the result – chasing the game – wears both teams and individuals down.

There can be nothing more exhausting than a boss or a sports coach – who piles on the pressure by placing the focus on the numbers – demanding the results.

Eventually corners will be cut to satisfy ‘’the boss’’…..”the coach”.

Success is found in the process, not the result

Focus on the process (doing the right things- doing things right) –  and the results will come.

Living the journey sustains great.

Go Great

ROB
