Cricket Australia needs a rethink to bounce back stronger.

‘ We all make mistakes – we are not perfect’: Hashim Amla expressing sympathy for the banned Aussie players

Cricket Australia has got it wrong.

Steve Smith and David Warner are the first guys I would pick in my team.

Abundant talent. Abundant passion.

Misguided intention.

We are all human beings.

We get things wrong at times.

That’s why CEO’s (and the highest level coaches in today’ professional sporting arena) get paid in telephone numbers:

to build culture –   to build brands – to build players

Australia’s  James Sutherland (CEO) and Darren Lehmann (Coach) have failed CRICKET AUSTRALIA –  BRAND AUSTRALIA.

Why the Australian cricket board did not fire both of them  – leaves one wandering the real future of Australian cricket.

Darren Lehmann was allowed to just walk away – resign.

Not removing their CEO – their chief strategist – was wrong.

Dishing out hefty bans to players is tantamount to addressing the symptom – not the real cause.

Both the CEO and the coach have guided the Australian  ”cricketing  missile‘’ for a protracted period of time – fostering and allowing the ‘’cheat culture’’ to take hold.

To put the blame on a few select players is foolhardy.

The problem runs far deeper.

Cricket Australia needs a rethink – if they are to bounce back stronger.

Happy Easter
Rob.

Winning is NOT sustainable if one chooses to cheat. Here’s why.

‘Integrity must be the foundation of all competitiveness’: Jack Welch

One has to be feeling for Dave Richardson this week – head of the ICC – International Cricket Council.

He has just finished dealing with the Rabada, Smith, Warner and de Kok debacle – and now he has to deal with the Australian cricket team – found cheating.

It casts doubt over the recent Ashes 4-0 series win by Australia – and explains why Mitchell Starc was able to reverse swing the ball with devastating effect in Durban.

‘Nothing in professional sport is done without the consent of your captain and coach’ Dale Steyn

Surely Darren Lehmann, as head coach, should not have allowed his captain to deliver a ‘concocted’ press statement  on Saturday evening – which added insult to injury for Aussie fans.

Surely Darren Lehmann, with all his playing and coaching experience, should not be encouraging his captain -and his players – to illegally tamper with the ball.

Surely Darren Lehmann knows that WINNING IS NOT SUSTAINABLE if one chooses to cheat.

Here’s why

Winning has a potent cocktail – which drives sustained success and significance:

 F.C.B : FAITH. CONFIDENCE  & BELIEF

FAITH: Supreme faith in a higher power, coupled with an unwavering faith in one’s own ability to get the job done (without having to resort to cheating)

CONFIDENCE: Confidence is the key ingredient of form. Cheating undermines confidence.

BELIEF:Belief drives performance.Cheating self-destructs and destroys belief.

Cheating compromises one’s own integrity, undermines self – worth and creates self – doubt in one‘s own ability to get the job done

By choosing to collectively cheat, the Australian cricket team will find it very difficult to bounce back from this one.

It’s time for a new head coach for Australian cricket – a new mentor to guide the Aussie players.

Maybe Gary Kirsten.

Go Great
Rob.

Rabada case sets ‘a new tone’ for SA youth.

Posted on: March 23rd, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

‘Cricket may be the greatest game in Kagiso’s eyes, but it’s still just a game’.

Many felt that the ban imposed on Kagiso Rabada was a litte harsh.

In reality, it goes beyond cricket.

Many of our youth in the ‘Zuma era’ have come to believe that it is acceptable to disrespect one’s opponents –  put simply –  disrespect others.

If that was allowed to continue in sport – it can destroy the game.

No one wants robots playing the game, no one wants passion subdued, and no one wants inspired  performance supressed ………..

If boxers can slug it out for 15 rounds – then embrace each other in sportsmanship – so can cricketers .We want to see the game played  in the right spirit – with skill, passion and respect for the opposition, the match officials and the laws.: Dave Richardson : ICC Chief Executive

Kagiso Rabada, at 22 years of age is a SA sporting revelation.

He can choose to argue relentlessly in front of a commission that he did not intentionally shoulder Steve Smith –  but in reality he DISPLAYED DISRESPECT for the Aussie captain – whether one chooses to like Steve Smith or not .

When a batsman is out. That’s it. He’s out.

We all do many stupid things when we are 22 years young: Dale Steyn

Kagiso Rabada is an awesome guy – and a beacon of hope for our youth.

Let’s hope his learning curve is a learning for all our SA youth.

On and off the field of play, RESPECT counts big in the game of life.

Go Great
Rob.

Cyril and Rassie. Engineering the biggest comeback since Apollo 13.

Posted on: March 9th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

‘It’s time for all South Africans to climb back on the horse’

Many moons back I had the opportunity, through sports sponsorship, to meet an up- and- coming young Free State rugby player.

Rassie Erasmas was great player on the field. And a great guy off the field.

Innovation was the name of his game – and for years he was in a class of his own as a flanker – going on to wear the Bok jersey on 36 occasions.

Now Rassie has his opportunity in what’s regarded as the toughest job in world rugby……………..

One of the potent tools used by great champions – and champion teams alike – is THE REALITY CHECK.

Where do we come from? Where are we now? Where do we want to be?

Let’s back track a few years for Rassie (and for Cyril)

In 2007 we were crowned Rugby World Cup Champions. It was a year when the mighty All Blacks were expected to take home the ‘Web Ellis’ trophy –  but they came badly unstuck losing in the quarterfinals to an opportunistic French team.

Four long years later, Riche McCaw, did finally get his opportunity to lift the World Cup trophy.

It feels like I have been in a long tunnel – and have just come out of it : Richie McCaw in 2011.

While the world began to feel the effects of the 2008 financial crisis, South Africans enjoyed the euphoria of the 2010 Soccer World Cup – and the associated infra-structural investment.

But, suddenly we also found ourselves thrust into a long tunnel which took our country to its knees –  President Zuma would take the country to the brink of collapse by 2017.

Thankfully, we have finally exited that long tunnel.

Finally we have real leaders.

There can be zero doubting that both Cyril and Rassie are in a class of their own.

And they’re busy engineering a better future for all South Africans.

Let’s give them all the support we can muster. It’s time for us all to climb back on the horse.

My bet is that we will all be part of one of the biggest comebacks since the Apollo 13.

Halala BRAND SOUTH AFRICA.

Go Great
