Roger Federer’s tears of gratitude.A great human being.

Posted on: January 30th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

” Gratitude reciprocates. The universe conspires to help those who conspire to help others”

Anyone watching The Australian Open final ceremony on Sunday must have realised it was something special.

Sport is special.

It dramatises life. It speeds up winning. It speeds up losing. It speeds up learning.

It’s transparent. And it consumes our human emotions.

None more so than observing 36 year old  Roger Federer’s stunning career resurgence , resulting in him lifting his 20th grand slam trophy – more than any other man.

Roger Federer is human great – defined as achieving :

 Sustained Success and Significance

He could not hold back the tears as he received a lengthy standing ovation from a packed Rod Laver arena – and I’m pretty sure millions standing in front of their televisions around the world.

It was one of those magic moments in sport – magic moments in life.

The fact that he has now, after Novak Djokovic’s period of dominance, turned it around at the age of 36 and won three Slams in the last 12 months is one of the most extraordinary sporting stories I have ever heard about  : BBC Sport commentator David Law

Roger Federer features in my latest book THE GAME CHANGERS – Chapter Eight: An Attitude of Gratitude

Who’s THE SHEPHERD’S SHEPHERD. SA CEO’S in the spotlight.

Posted on: January 15th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

”Integrity must be the foundation of all competitiveness” : Jack Welch

A fine line exists between ‘Growth Hungry’’ and ‘’Growth Greedy’’.

While Steinhoff shareholders brace themselves to find out the true extent of the accounting irregularities behind Steinhoff’s aggressive growth path, what is abundantly clear, is that SA CEO’s have the ability to create and destroy massive market value.

There can be no doubting that it’s lonely and tough at the top. Napoleon Hill was quoted as saying the ladder of success is never crowed at the top. There’s good reason for that, so the question that begs asking is:

Who’s the Shepherd’s Shepherd?

South African CEO’s have a preference to build powerful inner circles of trust, but this type of insular approach can bite back hard, as we have recently seen in both business – and in politics.

American CEO’s opt for a different approach,  preferring to take on support from the outside in the form of  performance coaches  –  none better than Anthony  Robbins, who has earned his reputation as ‘The CEO Whisperer ‘’.

When 90 % of a company’s wealth is at risk, it seems a no- brainer for CEO’s to invest in further supporting themselves.

It’s common practice in sport to take on a performance coach – when you’re No.1. in the world.

Human Greatness is

Sustained Success and Significance

– and that is where performance coaches play an ever increasing and important role.

While Steinhoff appears to have fallen into the ‘Growth Trap’ from an accounting perspective, the main challenges originate from a ‘Brand Values’’ perspective.

How closely are the CEO’s personal brand values (Purpose, Priorities and Performance Goals) aligned with that of the company brand – and what shareholders expect.

Brand values act as one’s compass in good times – and one’s scaffolding in challenging times.

Bill Gates is a fine example of the optimal alignment of personal and professional brand values.

His personal purpose: ‘to empower people to do more’, is closely mirrored by that of Microsoft – and his charity foundation.

The greater the alignment of brand values – the greater the chance is for sustained success and significance.

Famed American billionaire investor, Warren Buffet shares the following sage advice:

My Advice. Invest in yourself’

South Africa is blessed to have some of the greatest business CEO’s in the world.By taking a leaf out of the book of their American counterparts, let’s hope they will take it to the next level of great in 2018.

Cyril’s greatest opportunity beckons. Halala Brand South Africa.

Posted on: January 5th, 2018 by Rob Opie No Comments

” André, be careful with your decisions. André, be careful with your words. André, be careful with your relationships. André, we must all live our lives carefully.”  Nelson Mandela

Welcome back. Happy New Year. Here’s THE GAME PLAN’s first bit of inspiration for 2018.

Nelson Mandela’s chance meeting and wise words spoken to Andre Agassi resound. At age 25, Agassi was world number one, but by age 27, his professional and personal life had all but imploded – his world ranking slumping to 141.

Eighteen months later, Agassi reclaimed the No.1 ranking in the world, earning himself the nick name ‘The Come- Back Kid’.

Nelson Mandela was a genius at helping so many to :

 re-set their moral compass

Recently asked what he would choose if he could bring something back to life, Agassi answered:

The spirit of Nelson Mandela– which seems to be extinct

From the challenges facing our universities, to our state owned enterprises, and recently through to the top echelons of corporate boardrooms in South Africa – we have been on the slide – for too long.

Cyril Ramaphosa’s greatest opportunity for BRAND SOUTH AFRICA to move forward is:

to re-set the moral compass – to set the tone right for the way things should be done

It’s time, but it’s a repositioning job that he cannot do alone.

We all need to show up for practice – and play our part.

Let’s hope all South Africans will re-unite behind Cyril Ramaphosa.

We could well see one of the biggest come backs since ” the Apollo 13”.

Halala Brand South Africa.

As Jack Welch once said:

Integrity must be the foundation for all competitiveness

Go Great
