ROBO COP 3

Hi, I’m Coach Rob Opie, and the subject of this week’s COACHING NEWSLETTER is

Don’t chase the game. Live the journey.

Next week we will see Tiger Wood’s making his latest comeback to competitive golf.

The 41-year-old is set to resume his playing career when he tees it up at the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas Nov. 30 to Dec. 3.

It will be his first start since February, and as always, all eyes will be on him. Can he do it this time around?

In this week’s coaching newsletter, we go inside the game plan of one of sport’s greatest ever – a 14 time golf major winner, to see what we can learn from his remarkable life story.

Tiger Woods during the final round of the 2016 Hero World Challenge

Tiger’s story, is a story of two halves. One before age 31 – and one after age 31.

Not since the days of Jack Nicklaus (18 majors), Arnold Palmer (7 majors)  and Gary Player (9 majors) – has anyone dominated world golf like Tiger had by the age of 31.

Sports psychologist Steven Kosslyn had this to say about a man who was voted sporting super- star of the decade.

In Tiger’s head there is an orchestra. And it’s not just that some of the orchestra players are virtuosos. A lot of them are. He has all the aces – Steven Kosslyn

By age 31, Tiger had won 12 majors and was well on track to achieve his No.1 goal in life:

To become the greatest player who has ever played the game (by breaking Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors.)

But, then life changed dramatically for Tiger.

In May 2006, Tiger’s lost his dad, Earl Woods.

Earl Woods had served twenty years in the US Military. A Vietnam veteran, he retired a Lieutenant Colonel – his final posting as an instructor of military science and tactics. After retiring, he threw everything into guiding Tiger’s burgeoning golf career.

Earl Wood set his son military like goals, becoming his supreme mentor, strategist, tactician and confidante.

A pact existed between father and son – to chase down Jack Nicklaus’s record tally of majors. It was a pact to dominate world golf.

With his dad at his side, it was ok to ”chase the game – chase the results”, but suddenly at age 31, Tiger found himself all on his own.

Domination is a dangerous word, and ” BURN OUT ”was becoming an ever increasing risk for a lonely Tiger Woods.

Burn Out” transpires when too much focus is placed on  ”chasing the results’‘  –  resulting in too much pressure being placed on self.

The pressure can be relenting and all it takes is just one adversity for any athlete to reach and breach a tipping point.

Without his dad, his mentor by his side, it’s not too difficult to understand why Tiger tried to counter- balance:

extreme pain with extreme pleasure

From mid 2006, Tiger’s career began to derail – and it exploded in the media in 2009 when his many alleged extramarital indiscretions were revealed by several women, through many worldwide media sources.

In was a long hard road back for Tiger Woods, but to his credit he managed to climb back to the No.1 world ranking by April 2013.

But his No.1  ranking was short lived and something he was unable to sustain.

It was not the Tiger of old – with no more majors being added to his tally.

What could help Tiger to bounce back this time – and win a few more majors?

Note: Tiger’s last major victory was at the 2008 US OPEN.

Firstly, take his foot off the gas. Stop placing relentless pressure on himself.  Stop chasing the game. Stop chasing the results.

Secondly, to refine and refocus his second half game plan, with the primary focus this time around being placed on his purpose in life – not his goals in life:

To entertain, to educate and to enrich the lives of millions with his God- given sporting genius

Thirdly, find himself a mentor to help him navigate a brand new second – half road, one of :

Sustained Success and Significance

It’s near impossible to be at the top  –  and stay at the top – without mentorship these days.

Fourthly, start living the journey – and enjoying it.

Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured each step of the way – Brian Dyson

Rickie Fowler, Tiger’s practice mate, was recently asked if the rumours are true that Tiger’s been hitting it by him in practice at Medalist.

Oh yeah. Way by. So yeah, Tiger’s back- Rickie Fowler

Next week will see just how far Tiger has come? His current world ranking stands at a lowly 1189.

The Hero World Challenge is his charity event, so he is starting out right, by giving back to the game that has given him so much.

I believe he still has many majors left in him.

That’s if he surrounds himself with the right support –  support to help him power up both his professional and personal game plan.

GAME CHANGER NUMBER TEN : NO HEALTH. NO WEALTH.

Posted on: November 7th, 2017 by Rob Opie No Comments

” The main idea in life is not to be the richest man in the cemetery.”

ROBO COP 3

Hi, I’m Coach Rob Opie, and the subject of this week’s COACHING NEWSLETTER is

No Health. No Wealth.

A fine line exists between human greatness and human implosion.

Often the loss of one’s health – and sometimes one’s life – is the price that is paid when one pushes the human limits too far.

In this week’s coaching newsletter, we have a look at why it’s vital to strive for balance in your life – live a balanced professional and personal life.

I will be sharing with you some of the most powerful universal principles of life and health – the principles which govern our daily lives.

In 2011, one of the world’s true genius’s , succumbed to pancreatic cancer. He was 56 years old at the time, with an estimated net worth of 56 billion dollars.

My favourite things in life don’t cost any money. It’s really clear that the most precious resource we all have is time. Steve Jobs

As a workaholic, Steve Jobs never got that chance to share more time with family and friends.

He got it humanly wrong, when it comes to the universal principles of life and health – which pertain to life balance.

There are many potent life lessons that can be learnt from his fascinating, yet tragic life story…………

Here’s one of the invaluable insights on HUMAN WELLNESS, which I garnered from one of the most unlikely of sources.

It did not come from the medical fraternity.

It came from a sporting legend – one of Great Britain’s greatest ever middle distance athletes:

We all have a finite amount of energy. Whether you use physical or mental energy it all comes from the same source. Wherever you focus your energy you’re either filling or depleting the same  ”well”  Sir Sebastian Coe

In health and life no one can perform optimally when they are running on empty – when the human energy well is on reserve.

Our job is therefore to keep the HUMAN ENERGY WELL topped up to the brim – by living a life of balance.

Here are some insights on how to do that.

The human energy well – our wellness – has three vital buckets which we use to either fill or drain the well.

Each one is of equal importance – namely the physical, chemical and emotional buckets.

Physical is what we put into our bodies.

Chemical is what we put in our mouths.

Emotional is what we put in our heads.

By far the most powerful universal law of life and health is:

Too much or too little of anything for too long – creates a state of imbalance.

When we as human beings either unwittingly or habitually fail to maintain balance in our lives , we are effectively creating fertile ground for the onset of dis-ease – from minor cases such as a headache or backache – to life threatening ones such as cancer.

Here’s how it works :

In health and life, the human body is designed to operate in a state of balance – and functions optimally as a harmonious, synchronised unit.

When the mind, body and spirit are all in sync, there is an optimal state of life balance.

Life is good. Health is good.

We are tasked with creating and maintaining this ongoing state of balance, so that the human body can do its job.

Thankfully the genius of science has made us all pretty adept on how to fill our human energy well from the physical and chemical buckets.

We know how much sleep and rest we need.

We know how much exercise we need.

We know which foods agree with us, and which foods do not.

Our bodies have wonderful feedback mechanisms to help keep us balanced in the physical and chemical realms of life and health.

We mostly know what to take in here, and what not to take in.

For example in the physical realm, we know when we have had too much sun (it turns toxic on us in the form of sunburn).

In the chemical realm, we know when we have had too much alcohol, albeit only the next morning (it turns toxic on us in the form of a hangover).

But, it’s never that simple in the emotional realm.

When it comes to the potent emotional bucket – our understanding of the universal principles of health and life are actually limited:

Surprisingly very few people grasp the potent role that emotions play in maintaining or destroying our health and wealth

As human emotional beings, we live mostly hectic, fast-paced lives and many emotional stressors are often responsible for disturbing and disrupting this optimum state of balance.

Often it is from the emotional realm where human implosion happens.

Unwittingly or habitually, we continue to drain the human energy well from the emotional bucket, creating an on-going state of imbalance.

If this continues unabated for a lengthy time period, a tipping point is reached and breached.

The human energy well dries up.

The body has effectively moved from its balanced state of ease – to an unbalanced state of dis-ease (it turns toxic on us in the form of one or other chronic disease)

Here are some invaluable insights to help you to positively leverage the emotional bucket.

To fill up the human energy well using the emotional bucket – one should fill up one’s life with the  ‘Big Five’ positive emotions.

Here they are:

Gratitude,Unconditional Love, Acceptance, Forgiveness and Joy

They’re life’s greatest energizers. They’re life’s greatest healers.

And be very sure to steer well clear of life’s ”Big Five” negative emotions.

Here they are:

Resentment, Hate, Criticism, Guilt and Futility

They are life’s greatest drainers.

And if held long term, they turn toxic and become life’s greatest killers.

Our research at THE GAME PLAN reveals the following triggering causes of states of chronic dis-ease.

Are you seated ?

Long term held RESENTMENT (bitter indignation) can trigger CANCER.

Resentment festers in the human body and has the power to send the human cell formation process into total disarray.

Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies – Nelson Mandela

Long term held HATE can trigger a HEART ATTACK.

Hate has the power to cut off the flow of blood, the  flow of joy, in the human body.

Long term held GUILT can trigger Motor Neuron Dis-ease.

Guilt has the power to systematically close down your motor neurons.

Long term held CRITICISM can trigger ARTHRITIS, RHEMATISM, FIBROMYALGIA, SINUSITUS etc.

Criticism, especially self criticism, has the power to clog up the human body.

Long term held FUTILITY can trigger ADDICTION.

Futility, a form of  self pity and victimhood, has the power to block you from living a fulfilled , happy and healthy life.

Even today, with the genius advancements in modern medical science, most medical doctors will tell you that they do not know the cause of many of the so called  ”chronic diseases”.

That’s because most doctors still do not believe that unbalanced emotions can trigger disease.

Their primary approach is to treat the symptom rather than the cause – via powerful symptomatic drugs.

Key Insight

The most powerful drug on the market is one called LIFE BALANCE……and it comes free to YOU.

Some  more inspiration

Many moons back at a university commencement speech, Brian Dyson, the CEO of Coca Cola at the time,  shared the following wisdom on how to live a balanced life.

” Imagine your life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air.

You name them – work, family, health, friends and spirit – and you are keeping all of these in the air.

You’ll soon discover that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it – it will bounce back.

But, the other four balls are made of glass. If you drop these they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked , nicked, damaged or even shattered .They will never be the same.

You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.

Here’s how:

Don’t undermine yourself by comparing yourself with others .It is because we are different that each of us is special.

Don’t set goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.

Don’t take for granted the things closet to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life for without them, life is meaningless.

Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.

Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.

Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us to each other.

Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn to be brave.

Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find. The quickest way to receive love is to give, the fastest way to lose love is to hold and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.

Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.

Don’t forget that a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.

Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.

Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.

Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured each step of the way.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is gift.

That is why they call it ‘THE PRESENT “

GAME CHANGER NUMBER NINE : MEASURE IT . TO IMPROVE IT

Posted on: November 4th, 2017 by Rob Opie No Comments

” Every game has winner. Every winner has a game plan.”

ROBO COP 3

Hi, I’m Coach Rob Opie, and the subject of this week’s COACHING NEWSLETTER is

Measure it. To improve it.

In this week’s coaching newsletter , we go inside the game plans of some of the greats of sport  – to see how some get it right and how some get it humanly wrong at times.

Ultimately it’s the level of one’s game plan that determines human greatness – human greatness defined as achieving Sustained Success and Significance in life. ( The 3 S’s)

Whether you are playing the game at the very top level in business or sport , or are just someone without all the fame – you are playing the game.

Some people do not buy into the concept of  ” The Game ”.

But, rest assured you are in the game of life. You are playing the game and you cannot NOT choose.

Even saying that you dont want to play is a choice. The game is going on around you – and you are in it.

If you don’t understand this, it’s highly likely that you will get played by someone.

Milli – seconds, milli – meters and moments of madness divide the great in sport. It’s the very same in life.”

Let’s take a closer look at some now famous cases in sport.

In 2006 , French football great , Zinedine Zidane took it one step too far during the FIFA World Cup Final.  A moment of madness ensued when he head butted Italian  Marco Materazzi , after an incessant and personal verbal attack during the game . Zidane  received a red and Italy , now playing against ten men , went on to be crowned Word Cup Champions.

Zinedine Zidane was played. Played out the game.

Like it or not, sledging is part and parcel of sport, especially when opponents uncover your touch point.

You hear these things once and you try to walk away, that’s what I wanted to do because I was retiring. Then you hear it a second time and then a third. I would rather die than apologize to Materazzi.

Zinedine Zidane later apologised to his teammates and the French nation for his own actions.

How does an experienced football great get it so horribly, yet humanly wrong in the heat of the moment?

Fast forward to 2017 with English cricketing great, Ben Stokes.

After a violent Bristol street brawl in the early hours of the morning , the English cricketing hero found himself suspended and out of the  2017 Ashes tour – pending  police investigations .

But, here again it’s too late for apologies.Whatever the outcome , Ben Stokes reacted .

He got played . And found himself out the game.

Probably the most famous fall from grace has been that of Tiger Woods.

Game plans that may appear as rock solid from the outside, are often fragile within .

Being in the public eye, the great champions have to forever be on guard to avoid the various pitfalls. The best way to achieve this, is to continually invest in one’s own professional and personal brand.

And to continually seek to improve oneself.

Personal branding serves as one’s compass in good times and one’s scaffolding in challenging times.

Personal branding means constant reality checking and measurement.

Management and business guru , Peter Ducker is famous for saying  :

If You Can’t Measure It , You Can’t Improve It.

When you think about this quote, it should immediately become apparent how true it is. Because, if you can’t measure something, and know the results, you can’t possibly get better at it.

Sporting  greats like Roger Federer invest heavily in their own professional and personal brands. They operate very high level game plans.  And they constantly measure themselves.

This makes them ‘NINERS’  ( 9/10 ).

They play the game at LEVEL NINE when you consider the ‘ Everest’ measurement barometer below.

It’s a good place to operate from as in sport and in life – like attracts like.

Seven equals good. Eight equals great. Nine equals greater.

We would all like to play the game consistently as ‘NINERS’, but few of us do.

That’s because it’s so easy to be good, but it’s really hard to be great. And it’s even tougher when one is constantly in the public eye, like our sporting greats .

Where are you?

For Ben Stokes to bounce back stronger and wiser, he needs to power up his professional and personal game plan. Here’s how:

Every high level GAME PLAN consists of three potent  P’s :  Purpose, Priorities and Performance Goals.

Keeping them all closely aligned – and focused –  takes one from Good to Great to Greater.

STEP ONE is to clearly define your PURPOSE

For Ben Stokes it should read :

To Entertain. To Educate. To Enrich the lives of millions.

With his God- given sporting talents he has the opportunity to do all three of the above .He has the ability to impact on the lives of millions, especially kids who idolize their sporting heroes.

Unfortunately, Ben Stokes sent the wrong educational message out to the youth via his late night brawling.

Purpose is the thing that will keep you afloat, no matter how the tide turns. And if you have it, you can get through just about anything : Alex Granger .

STEP TWO is to clearly articulate and align one’s highest PRIORITIES in life

This is never that easy, so here’s a quick guide as to how the priorities of the great champions stack up in hierarchical order. (so should yours )

Priority # One: Invest in Yourself. Your Professional and Personal Brand

Priority # Two: Invest in your Purpose in Life

Priority # Three: Invest in your Family and Friends

Priority # Four: Invest in your Health and Wealth

Priority # Five: Invest in your desired Lifestyle

It’s important to FOCUS on one’s top priorities in life , as focus drives sustained success and significance.

Bill Gates said :

The most important thing I have learnt in life is to focus my energy on what is important in life

Clear priorities help one to make clear decisions in life. Saying no, or walking away becomes far easier. If Ben Stokes had his priorities clear he would surely have done things differently.

STEP THREE is to clearly align and action one’s top three PERFORMANCE GOALS – for current year

Keeping these congruent, aligned and simple plays a big part of attaining and sustaining SUCCESS .

Unfortunately many sports coaches do not have the necessary skills to help players with their personal game plans .They tend to shy away when personal adversity strikes.

I have no clue when he will be available again for selection. It’s totally out of our hands. We have to just get on with preparing the best we can. I have written off Ben Stokes for the Ashes tour . Trevor Bayliss. England cricket coach .

A coach’s role is to step up to the plate and help individual players improve themselves – in both their professional and personal lives.

Ben Stokes appears to be all on his own – and not getting the right support and the right guidance from his current coach.

It’s best for him to then seek out a close mentor, who can help him channel his obvious aggression in more appropriate and positive ways on the field of play .

It’s an opportunity for him. To measure himself .To improve himself.

England needs his all-round cricketing talent, and his channelled aggression, if they are to challenge for the No. 1  ranking in world cricket.

Every adverse situation presents an opportunity for self improvement

Key Insight

To power up one’s game – one must power up one’s game plan.
