GAME CHANGER NUMBER SIX . THE POWER IN THE PELOTON

Izandla Ziya Gizana – a Zulu saying meaning hands wash each other

ROBO COP 3 Hi ,  I’m  Coach Rob Opie , and the subject of this week’s COACHING NEWSLETTER is

 The Power in the Peloton

Peloton Def : In a road bicycle race, the peloton (from French, originally meaning ‘platoon’) is the main group or pack of riders. Riders in a group save energy by riding close (drafting or slipstreaming) near (particularly behind) other riders

In this week’s coaching newsletter , we will be going inside the game plans of the great Tour de France champions to see how they take full advantage of  ” The Power in the Peloton ”- and explore  how others in sport, like the mighty All Blacks , do likewise to save finite energy –  without us even realising it.

The Tour de France is no easy race.

The modern editions of the tour consist of 21 gruelling stages over a 23-day period and cover around 3,500 kilometres. And they say there are days at the Tour de France when one would consider swapping non-vital organs for a bit of shade.

One thing is for sure – it’s 21 days of intense competition where the champion riders, dogged by constant scrutiny and continuing  doping allegations, seek to find and apply leverage in many different legal formats.

Leverage defined as the ability to do more – with less.

One of these potent forms of leverage is the Peloton (from French, meaning little ball or platoon).

The purpose of the Peloton is to do more with less – hence creating an:

Elastic Band Effect

It’s all about the alignment of the team . Synchronicity saves energy  –  and creates a magical multiplier effect.

In many ways it’s the same in real life: T.E.A.M standing for :

Together Everyone Achieves More

By riding close to other riders (drafting, slipstreaming and particularly behind), the reduction in drag is dramatic :

Scientists have proven that it can be as much as 40 %

The peloton travels as an integrated unit (similar in some respects to birds flying in formation) with each rider making slight adjustments in response to their adjacent riders. Riders at the front are exposed to higher loads, and will tend to slip off the front in order to rejoin the pack farther back. A fluid formation often results in a situation where the centre of the peloton appears to be pushing through its own leading edge.

The Peloton mimics strategies and tactics used in real life situations – and having to adapt to constant change.

A strong headwind or a hard effort tends to spread out or string out the riders, while a slow tempo or tailwind tends to bunch up the peloton into a wider formation.

Side winds force the peloton to form into echelons in the direction of the wind.

Often, the width of the road , forces the peloton to form several echelons. When two or more groups of riders want to contest control of the peloton, several lines may form racing one another.  So, it’s always advantageous to be close to the front of the peloton.

One reason is to avoid being affected by the “elastic band effect” –  in which a change in speed becomes amplified as it propagates to the back of the peloton – often resulting in  serious wipe outs.

All types of team dynamics come into play as teams seek to create competitive advantage and deliver their lead rider to the bottom of the first big Pyrenean climbing stage – fresher than any rivals – and with the opportunity to let loose.

It’s about being FRESH . being ready to step up to the plate – when required to do so .

It’s the power of the Peloton. It’s the power leverage – the ability to do more with less.

And it applies far beyond the realms of  professional cycling :

Consider the mighty All Blacks.

A coach’s primary role it to get a team to perform consistently at its highest potential- and the players within the team .

Current All Black Coach , Steve Hansen is doing a mighty fine job, with a win record above 90 % .

A lot of that has to do with ‘the peloton effect ‘which the All Blacks have cultured . Every player knows exactly where they fit in – where they stand in ‘The Haka ‘ – and even more so when they are playing .

Any player  who steps out of formation  – out of line on or off the field of play , soon finds himself either on the bench or  right out of the match day 23.

By operating in a peloton , the All Blacks save on their finite energy levels ,and this saving can be as great as 40 %  according to scientists .

This means they go into battle far fresher , with 40 % more energy to expend , than opponents who ” fail to align ” themselves.

Teams that fail to align themselves will often experience the very opposite effect – a drag effect of up to 40% – leading to mental and physical exhaustion.

The peloton’s elastic band effect often proves decisive in winning or losing.

It’s one potent game -changer leveraged in business, sport and life.

It’s the power of the human collective in action.

Practical Tip for the week

Leverage is the ability to do more with less .

THIS WEEK’s INPIRATIONAL VIDEO   :

I  found this video from way back : David Foster’s   ‘Winter Games ”-   1988  Calgary Olympics official theme song

Wow ,  29 years on , it’s still something spectacular to watch .

The Power in the Peloton  – as depicted by an orchestra  –  and olympic skiers  all  in perfect unison .

And it’s not just some of the orchestra’s players or skiers are virtuosos , a lot of them are.

Perfectly in sync .

Please watch how the skiers make things look oh so easy -and fun.

When someday , someone, some team has got your number. Brilliant All Blacks.

Posted on: September 18th, 2017 by Rob Opie No Comments

You prepare and prepare and one day nothing works, and some guy has simply just got your number. Andre Agassi

Anybody who plays sport has experienced it.

Someday, someone, some team will just have your number.

And 57-0 is a big number in rugby terms.

A record win and the first whitewash since Richie McCaw’s All Blacks whitewashed the Boks 19 – 0 at Newlands in 2008

What happened?

There was something more to it than just the Rugby World Champions flexing their muscles – upping their game as usual ?

It was too clinical.

It was a long time coming for them.

By their own  very high standards, the All Blacks have had a poor run of late.

After the disappointment of the Lions series, near losses to Australia and Argentina at home,  and their battles to consistently meet the high standards they themselves and the New Zealand rugby public set, Saturday presented an opportunity for them.

And it was more than just player talent which triggered a clinically destructive display

It’s comes down to something called ”E ‘’ Power. Emotion Power.

E: Power is triggered when a team or an individual finds emotive reason.

And in sport, ‘’E ‘’Power can deliver devastating results  – which stand in awe.

Sometimes it’s the  underdog who suddenly turns destroyer, but on Saturday it was the World Champions, galvanising themselves into collective pursuit of one thing which has been playing heavily on their minds – and affecting team performances of late .

Their playing season has been rocked by many off the field incidents in the last year.

Over the last 12 months alone, their own  ”HONOR CODE ” being dealt some severe internal blows.

Saturday was an opportunity to turn the tide – and put it all right again.

And, what better to do it against their old foe – the Boks!

Steve Hansen played it superbly, having kept his mouth shut in the media about what was going on  – off the field of play.

The players respected that – and on Saturday they repaid their coach handsomely.

The Boks caught the backlash from true World Champions, who were desperate to restore ‘’ their honor code ’’- for themselves.

It was clinical.

It was a burning desire coming from within their own dressing room.

Springbok Coach, Alister Coetzee reflected  on arrival back at OT  :

we walked into the perfect storm

The reality is –  that any team in the world –  would have ‘’ copped it ’ from an É Powered All Black team –  on this given Saturday in Albany.

BEWARE  E POWER . It’s a Game Changer .

BOKKE :  If you want  to turn things around at Newlands , you have to close down their No. 1  play-maker .  And it’s not Beauden Barrett , but rather a certain Aaron Smith , who is the guy who’s creating all the extra space which they play in  …………  he’s a Fourie du Preez.

Can the Boks exploit the ALL BLACK opportunity gap?

Posted on: September 12th, 2017 by Rob Opie No Comments

Adversity is the training ground of champions

All Black Coach, Steve Hansen believes that the Boks will be dangerous in Albany this weekend. He’s right .

But,  is it because the Boks have a new found  ”playing culture ’’- or is it because the All Blacks are erroneously dissipating their very own  ”playing culture”  ?

There can be little doubting that the All Blacks, who have often been described as ‘the best sporting team in world  ‘’,  are missing the exemplary leadership of a certain Richie McCaw.

The All Blacks have not been on top of their game of late , and things are beginning to open up for teams hungry to exploit the opportunity gap – as saw with the recent British & Irish Lions tour.

Even before the Aaron Smith incident  , All  Black rugby was accused of covering up a multitude of  incidents  – incidents that simply had no place under Richie’s famed : ‘no d***heads’ policy amongst the squad.

P.D.N.L – Pricks do not last  – was the  All Black mantra under Richie McCaw

A potent culture that took the All Blacks to two consecutive World Cup victories, but it’s now eighteen months since Richie McCaw retired.

And , wow how things are a changing :

We certainly understand that our game and our players are under public scrutiny and these latest stories are concerning:  NZR chief executive, Steve Tew

That’s all fine, when it’s just one isolated incident , but these incidents are coming fast and furious .

There is some kind of trouble in the camp.

Their own internal  ‘HONOUR CODE” has been dealt some hefty internal blows.

And a few questions must be asked of their management –  and their players.

If you lose money for the firm I will be understanding. If you lose reputation I will be ruthless. Warren Buffet

Can the Boks –  who are no strangers to adversity –   take advantage  ?

Or will the All Blacks simply step up another gear  – and show us that adversity is merely the training ground of champions.

The Boks coud then be on the receiving end of  a untimely backlash from the World Champions ?

Interesting times .Let’s see which way it goes .

GO BOKKE GO

GAME CHANGER NUMBER FIVE : CONQUER. NEVER FIGHT.

Posted on: September 8th, 2017 by Rob Opie No Comments

I came. I saw. I conquered – Julius Caesar, 46 BC

ROBO COP 3 Hi, I’m Coach Rob Opie, and the subject of this week’s COACHING NEWSLETTER is

 Conquer. Never Fight

Extreme challenge comes to all of us at some time in our lives .

Our mettle gets tested, and it’s at times like these that it’s best to take heed of what the great champions of life know, do and do not do to overcome some of life’s greatest challenges.

In this week’s coaching newsletter , I  share some of the strategies and tactics of the great Everest explorers , and take you inside the game plan of an athlete who has experienced the ultimate highs of ”conquering ” and ultimate  lows of ” fighting’ ,  namely Lance Armstrong .

There’s lots that we can learn from those who have gone before – and the most unlikely of champions.

Sustained Success in life comes far easier to those who choose to:

Conquer. Never fight.

I will be sharing with you a CHAMPION’S  MODEL –  on how to conquer any ‘mountain’ which may stand in front of you right now.

It’s the stuff of champions all packaged for you in a potent CHAMPION’S MODEL .

It’s the stuff that they not do not teach at Harvard. The stuff which you cannot Google.

The great champions of Business , Sport and Life all love to push the limits of human endurance.

They willingly go into zones of human extremity  to explore what the human mind and human body can do .

They are all explorers .

And none come better than the early Everest explorers . ( before it became the commercial operation which it is today )

Everest stands 8 848m (29 029 feet) , and for those who climb to its summit, enter what is commonly dubbed  ‘the death zone’ above 8000 m.

It’s a zone where ‘helicopters do not fly’; as it is here that the air is too thin for rescue missions. It’s a zone where it’s all about man versus mountain – and taking full responsibility.

You could die in each climb and that meant you were responsible for yourself. We were real mountaineers: careful, aware and even afraid. By climbing mountains we were not learning how big we were. We were finding out how breakable, how weak and how full of FEAR we are. You can only get this if you expose yourself to high danger. I have always said that a mountain without danger is not a mountain.    Reinhold Messner

Many years ago the great British explorer, George Mallory, who was later to die on the mountain, was asked why he wanted to climb Everest

Because its there

In recent years the mountain has been commercialized  ,  but even today it still tragically takes lives,  as recreational climbers pile on the commercial pressure to be on the mountain.

But, every great Everest Champion knows that :

Nobody bullies Everest.

You cannot fight the mountain. Those that fight the mountain –  will often die on the mountain.

Everest teaches us about life .

What is the use of climbing Mount Everest? If you cannot understand that there is something in man which responds to the challenge of this mountain and goes out to meet it, that the struggle of life itself upward and forever upward, then you won’t see why we go. What we get from this adventure is sheer joy. And joy is, after all, the end of life.  George Mallory

Make no mistake, the great everest explorers have refined strategies and tactics to conquer, never fight   – the world’s highest mountain.

CONQUERING VERSUS FIGHTING ?

Conquering means coming from a position of strength. Fighting means coming from a position of weakness.

Conquering means coming with  a HIGHER  LEVEL GAME PLAN.Fighting means coming with a LOWER LEVEL GAME PLAN

Whether the mountain is EVEREST , or in Lance Armstrong’s case, an even greater mountain called CANCER, the great champions choose

To conquer. Never fight.

Lance Armstrong got it humanly wrong in his quest to push the human limits in cycling , but when it comes to conquering cancer –  he is  seen as a  hero by millions of Cancer Champions around the globe .

In his  book “It’s not about the bike ” he  selflessly shared what he called ”his gift”  to fellow cancer patients.

Sadly, the wisdom he shared , remains esoteric.

But, from it comes a potent model on how to conquer anything in life – any ”mountain” in life  .

In this newsletter I will share with you his potent CHAMPIONS  MODEL –  and REFRAME IT  – so that it can be used by YOU to conquer any of  the professional or personal  ”mountains ” in your life .’

Lance Armstrong’s model had four all important table legs. They were  :  MOTIVATION , KNOWLEDGE , SUPPORT  & HOPE

With them in place, he conquered cancer –  and he remains cancer free to this day .

NB: If you would  like to find out more about the non- profit work we do at THE GAME PLAN  in order to help and assist those who want to conquer cancer –  and download the two FREE  eBooks which I  have written on the subject , please visit our cancer resource site at :   CANCER CHAMPIONS

Ok , now let’s overlay Lance Armstrong’s CHAMPIONS’s MODEL , on that of the great  Everest champions . In other words:

Let’s take it to the next level. Let’s power it up

One soon discovers that common denominators do exist, and they guide us as to how the great champions ”conquer ”.

No matter what ” mountain” stands in front of you right now – in your professional and /or personal life  – IF you apply the CHAMPIONS’s  MODEL , as shared with YOU  below , the power will be in your hands  ”to conquer” anything.

Here we go :

HOW TO CONQUER .

If you want to conquer anything in life, make sure you have the following  FOUR TABLE LEGS OF THE CHAMPION’S TABLE aligned and balanced .

Each leg of the Champion’s Table is of equal importance.

TABLE LEG NUMBER ONE:THE RIGHT MINDSET:   ”The Power of Human Choice ”

Lance Armstrong called the first leg MOTIVATION . We prefer to call it MINDSET. Having the right mindset.

Mindset is a human choice.

People who choose ”to fight” have an inherent mindset of VICTIM. It’s a subtle form of self sabotage.

The great champions choose”to conquer ” .

They adopt the mindset of VICTOR.

One’s best made plans – one’s strategies and tactics in life – will prove meaningless unless you possess the right mindset.

Choose right up front. Commit 100 % to conquer . And cut out all forms of doubt.

If you want to swim the English Channel – you must leave your doubt on the beach in Dover : Lewis Pugh

NUMBER TWO:  THE RIGHT KNOWLEDGE ‘The Power of Human Awareness ”

A big part of my success has been wave knowledge : Kelly Slater : 11 times world surfing Champion

The human race has evolved from the survival of the fittest to that of the survival of the smartest .

Great Champions go in prepared knowing that  Everest can provide every conceivable challenge from altitude sickness, to lack of oxygen, to time cut offs ,  to adverse weather and cold, to high winds , to mind plays , to physical  exhaustion, to  climbing hazards , to  slippery ice  , to frost bite  and on and on .

An Everest Champion enters the ” death zone ”above 8000 meters with very high levels of awareness.

They come from a position of strength, which is bolstered by acquiring right knowledge.

NUMBER THRRE:  THE RIGHT  SUPPORT  ‘The Power of Human Collective  ”

Nothing great is ever achieved alone.

The great Champions know this and build potent inner circles of trust’.

They surround themselves with believers, ensuring that they are always getting ”the right support.”

There can be nothing worse than having the wrong support – having  to  listen to  the wrong  people  – who are supplying  you with the wrong knowledge.

You got to hang around people who believe in you.

Lance Armstrong knew this from his cycling days where scientists have proven that:

Riding in a peloton can help you to achieve 40 % more’

It’s the power of the human collective put into action.

NUMBER FOUR :  THE RIGHT GAME PLAN  ‘The Power of Human Focus  ”

Is your Game Plan made of the right stuff ?

Lance Armstrong called the final leg of the Champions Table : HOPE  , but in reality it’s much more than that.

Hope is  NOT a strategy . Hope comes from having a focused high level GAME PLAN in place .

You have to put in the hard yards to develop HOPE , and  Lance Armstrong is certainly no stranger to doing that .

He had an abundance of RESOLVE ( MINDSET ) , KNOWLDEGE , SUPPORT and HOPE ( GAME PLAN )

He had all the potent P’s of Personal Branding stacked and closely aligned in his GAME PLAN TO CONQUER CANCER .

PURPOSE: Be clear on your higher purpose in life

PRIORITY: Be clear on your Big Five priorities in life .

PERFORMANCE GOALS: Be clear on your BIG THREE goals in life

The most important thing I have learnt in life is to FOCUS my energy on what is important in life : Bill Gates

Practical Tip for the week

Fighting empowers your enemy. Conquer.Never Fight.

SOME READING  :

An interesting read is Shaun Tomson’s book : 12 Simple Lessons for Riding through Life.

He shares the following insight  :

Never fight a rip tide – Shaun Tomson

A rip tide is a powerful current of water that sweeps even the strongest swimmer out to sea. The obvious thing to do is to fight against the rip tide.  But, by trying to swim directly against it, one quickly gets into trouble and panic results.

It simply cannot be done.  And people often drown. Surfers on the other hand – simply love the rip tides. They use them like ‘’ conveyer belts ‘’ to get to where they want to be – far quicker.

Mother Nature teaches us never to fight. The human smart thing to do is to acquire greater knowledge – and a greater understanding.
